[디지털데일리 고성현기자] LG에너지솔루션과 삼성SDI가 미국에서 생산하는 테슬라향 리튬인산철(LFP) 기반 에너지저장장치(ESS)용 배터리 생산 시점을 계속해서 앞당기고 있다. 미국 행정부의 탈중국 기반 정책 요건에 맞는 배터리 수급이 급해지면서 관련 양산 시점을 확대하는 것으로 풀이된다.
11일 업계에 따르면 LG에너지솔루션, 삼성SDI는 최근 미국 내에서 생산하는 각형 LFP ESS 배터리 생산 시점을 앞당기고 있다. 이에 맞춰 라인 구축 시점과 실제 가동 시기도 새롭게 조율하는 모습이다.
LG에너지솔루션은 현재 테슬라용 ESS 배터리 대응을 위해 미시간주 랜싱 공장에서 각형 배터리 생산 라인을 구축하고 있다. 이를 위해 올해 1분기 협력사 대상으로 발주 요청서(P/O)를 내고 올해 하반기 중 이를 반입해 설치할 계획을 세웠다. 당초 가동 시기는 내년 하반기 말이 유력했으나, 설비 반입 시점을 올해 3분기로 앞당기면서 올해 말에서 내년 초 중 시생산을 거쳐 내년 3분기 중 양산을 본격화할 것으로 전망된다.
삼성SDI은 스텔란티스 합작법인 '스타플러스 에너지(SPE)'에서 전환 중인 LFP ESS 라인을 올해 말 중 가동할 것으로 예측된다. 현재 장비가 순차적으로 도입되는 점을 고려할 때 이례적으로 빠른 속도다. 배터리 업계에서는 삼성SDI가 설비를 라인에 설치하면서 LFP 각형 배터리 시생산과 양산 평가를 병행해 속도를 높일 것으로 보고 있다.
양사가 이처럼 미국 현지 LFP 각형 배터리 생산 속도를 올리는 배경에는 도널드 트럼프 행정부의 감세법(OBBBA)이 있다. 트럼프 행정부가 기존 인플레이션감축법(IRA)의 탈중국 원료·부품 수급 요건이었던 해외우려기업집단(FEOC)을 금지외국기관(PFE)으로 격상했고, 해마다 중국 등 우려국가 외 원료·부품 수급 비중을 확대하며 규제 수위를 높이는 추세다.
올해는 PFE로부터 수급하는 원료·광물·부품 비중이 40%로 제한돼 있으나 내년부터는 35%로 줄어든다. 만약 내년 기준 PFE 수급 비중이 35%를 넘을 경우 ESS의 투자세액공제(ITC)나 배터리 첨단제조생산세액공제(AMPC) 등을 받을 수 없게 된다. 이에 따라 미국 내 주요 ESS 공급 기업들이 탈중국 기반의 현지 배터리 수급을 요구하는 것으로 풀이된다.
양사의 미국 현지 내 각형 LFP ESS 배터리 공급 고객사가 테슬라인 점도 한몫하고 있다. LG에너지솔루션은 지난해 7월 테슬라와 각형 LFP 배터리 공급 계약을 맺었고, 삼성SDI도 올해 1월 말 테슬라로 추정되는 미공개 고객사와 LFP ESS 배터리 공급 계약을 체결했다. 테슬라가 미국 ESS 시장 1위 사업자인 만큼 양사를 통한 탈중국 기반 ESS 배터리 수급을 안정화하기 위한 차원이다.

배터리 업계에서는 LG에너지솔루션과 삼성SDI의 각형 LFP 배터리 공급을 시작으로 ESS용 배터리 공급 판도가 더욱 커질 것으로 내다봤다. 인공지능(AI) 데이터센터 인프라 투자 확대로 전력망을 안정화할 ESS 수요가 커진 데다, 미국 내 중국 업체의 진입 제한으로 현실적인 LFP 배터리 수급을 위한 선택지가 국내 배터리 3사밖에 없는 덕분이다.
이를 위해 LG에너지솔루션은 핵심 기반인 미시간주 홀랜드 공장의 파우치 LFP 배터리 생산 속도를 높이고 있다. 스텔란티스로부터 인수한 캐나다 '넥스트스타 에너지'와 혼다 합작법인, 제너럴모터스(GM) 합작법인을 활용해 ESS용 배터리 공급을 확대할 방침이다.
